Middleton Healthy Living Initiative enables people to take more control over their own health and find support to help them with their condition in the community. There are a range of activities involving chronic disease sufferers, young people, women and the over 50's.

The key principles are:

  A holistic approach to health
  Targeting the prevention and self management of
chronic conditions
  Engage proactively with young people on their terms
  Builds informal support networks for target groups
  Improves access to all services by groups that currently
under use or fail to access services
  Added value activity

The available activities will include:
Engaging young people in excercise and sports
Training young people to become Junior Sports Leaders - Develop them to run peer sports activities
Healthy activity weekends and school holiday courses
Training in first aid, food safety, healthy eating and safer, healthier lifestyles
Counselling, advocacy and advice sessions
Production of young person friendly health promotion materials
fitness and self defence training
Provide a high quality holistic health service which promotes mental and physical health and wellbeing. This will include aromatherapy, massage, reflexology, indian head massage, pilates, tai chi and yoga
Training people to become food workers
Healthy eating for adults, healthy eating for young adults, men's dietary health, women's dietary health, fun with food
Training local people in the self management of chronic conditions, the development of patient mentors to work with other people to enable them to manage life with chronic conditions

These are a sample of the activities which will be included in the initiative. The long term aim is that people will change their lifestyle to one which improves their health and well-being.
